An Embodied AI Approach to Measures of the Self

Artificial agents can undergo a developmental process that enables them to exhibit adaptive behavior typically associated with having a sense of self. We can approach measures of the self through two methodologically distinct approaches: one based on the properties of computational models and their implementation in artificial agents, and another based on behavioral observations inspired by variations of a sensorimotor Turing Test (smTT). In this talk, we will explore measures based on the smTT and propose a framework to differentiate between human-generated movements and those produced by artificial agents. This framework could be used to test theories of agency and the embodied self.
